Course Description:

Do you feel like you need more practice with the AAP Classifications? You’re not alone — and this is exactly why this workshop exists.

If you’ve ever second-guessed your staging and grading… hesitated with AAP terminology… or wished you had more hands-on practice rather than more theory, this experiential case-study event is for you.

Over three evenings, you’ll work alongside your peers to confidently apply the AAP Classifications using real, relatable cases — complete with full periodontal charting, radiographs, client histories, and clinical scenarios. Together, we’ll determine whether each client presents with clinical health, gingivitis, or periodontitis — and if periodontitis is present, we will accurately establish both stage and grade using a structured, repeatable approach you can take straight back to practice.

This course is highly interactive, practical, and designed to build your confidence, accuracy, and speed in classification. You will leave this workshop feeling prepared, calibrated, and ready to apply the AAP Classifications consistently in any clinical situation.

Recommended Pre-Requisite

Participants should come with a basic understanding of the AAP Classifications. If you would benefit from a theory refresher before diving into case-based application, we recommend taking ABC’s of AAP Classifications first. Click here to register.

Course Objectives:

Define key terms related to gingival health, gingivitis, periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
Calculate bleeding on probing percentages (BOP%).
Compare BOP % for gingival health, gingivitis and periodontitis clients.
Determine whether a client presents as healthy, gingivitis or periodontitis.
Establish the correct stage and grade for a periodontitis client.
Choose generalized, localized or molar-incisor pattern in relation to disease distribution.
Identify periodontal stability or instability in terms of stable, unstable or in remission.
Define an open periodontal pocket and a closed periodontal pocket.
Examine the gingival margin (GM).
Discuss an intact periodontium vs. reduced periodontium.
Determine where clinical attachment loss (CAL) is present, and whether CAL is from periodontitis or non-periodontitis related factors.
Differentiate between periodontal disease and periodontal conditions.
Investigate and discuss a client’s past periodontal history.
Identify periodontal disease risk factors.
Calculate the radiographic bone loss percentage (RBL %).
Confirm the client’s grade via radiographs.
Develop the correct periodontitis statement for the client.
