This course offers an in-depth exploration of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) classification category: Other Conditions Affecting the Periodontium. Through a case-based and evidence-informed approach, participants will learn to identify, assess, and manage non-plaque-induced periodontal conditions, including systemic disease manifestations, mucogingival deformities, traumatic lesions, and more. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the etiology, clinical features, and treatment considerations for these diverse conditions. Ideal for dental professionals aiming to expand their diagnostic skills and deliver comprehensive periodontal care.

This course bridges the gap between routine plaque-induced diseases and more complex periodontal presentations.

Note: ABC’s of AAP Classifications is not required for this course. Anyone wanting to enhance their periodontal knowledge can participate!

Course Objectives:

Describe the key categories included under “Other Conditions Affecting the Periodontium” within the 2017 AAP Classification system.
Differentiate between plaque-induced periodontal diseases and non-plaque-induced conditions affecting the periodontium.
Identify clinical signs and symptoms of mucogingival deformities, traumatic lesions, endodontic-periodontal lesions, and systemic condition-related manifestations.
Interpret relevant case scenarios to accurately classify periodontal conditions beyond the typical gingivitis and periodontitis diagnoses.
Apply appropriate assessment tools when encountering atypical periodontal presentations.
Evaluate the implications of these conditions on treatment planning and interdisciplinary care.
Enhance communication with patients and other health professionals when managing complex periodontal conditions.
