Course Description:

Today’s dental hygienist has access to more assessment tools, technologies, adjuncts, and therapeutic options than ever before—yet with so many choices, it can be challenging to determine what truly belongs in a modern periodontal program.

What should your periodontal program look like today? What should you implement now? How can you integrate new technologies and adjunctive therapies in a way that is evidence-informed, efficient, and clinically meaningful? And how do we move beyond simply treating disease to supporting better, more sustainable periodontal outcomes?

A successful periodontal program requires more than a collection of treatments and technologies. It requires a clear, intentional approach that considers the biofilm, inflammation and host response, individual risk factors, appropriate adjunctive therapies, as well as the behaviours and systemic factors that can influence treatment outcomes and overall health.

The Evolving Periodontal Program brings together five essential areas of modern periodontal care—Biofilm & Inflammation, Technology Optimization, Targeted Antimicrobial Therapy, Collaborative Care, and Strategies for Optimal Periodontal Health—all working toward one central objective: Creating the conditions for healing and long-term stability.

Participants will explore how today’s technologies, adjunctive therapies, assessment strategies, and emerging approaches can be thoughtfully integrated into an individualized periodontal program—not simply adding more to what we do, but understanding why, when, and for whom different strategies may be beneficial.

New to this expanded program is a dedicated section on targeted supplementation, exploring evidence-informed nutritional and supplementation strategies that may support periodontal health, inflammation modulation, and host resilience. Nutrition, patient behavioural change, and oral probiotics will further broaden the discussion of how we can support both oral and systemic wellness.

Through a combination of evidence-based research, clinical insight, practical strategies, and interactive case discussions, this course will help dental hygienists refresh, refine, and elevate their periodontal programs with clarity, confidence, and purpose!

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Analyze the relationship between biofilm, inflammation, and the host response in periodontal disease progression.
Apply evidence-informed protocols to optimize the use of periodontal technologies and adjunctive therapies in clinical practice.
Evaluate targeted antimicrobial strategies that support mechanical debridement and biofilm management in periodontal therapy.
Recognize opportunities for collaborative care and appropriate referral to support periodontal and overall health outcomes.
Explore strategies that support long-term periodontal stability.
