Course Description:

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) has a long history within the dental hygiene profession and has become an increasingly recognized area of clinical practice.

This introductory course provides dental hygienists with a foundational understanding of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). Participants will explore relevant anatomy, normal oral rest posture, common signs and symptoms of OMDs, and practical screening strategies that can be incorporated into a comprehensive dental hygiene assessment.

Upon completion, participants will be better prepared to recognize potential OMDs, identify when referral to other healthcare providers may be appropriate, and determine whether further education in myofunctional therapy may complement their professional practice.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Define Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy and describe its role within oral health and interdisciplinary care.

2. Identify key anatomical structures and functions related to orofacial growth and development.

3. Distinguish normal oral rest posture from common patterns associated with Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs).

4. Identify common signs, symptoms, and contributing factors associated with OMDs.

5. Apply basic screening principles to recognize potential OMDs and identify when referral to another healthcare provider may be appropriate.

This 6-hour online course is a pre-requisite for the Full Myo Practical Program (30 hours)
